66ers’ Pitchers Shines, Walsh Comes Through in Clutch
By Steve Wendt
Lake Elsinore, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino got an outstanding effort from a trio of righties and a clutch bases-clearing double from Jared Walsh to open a four-game series at Lake Elsinore’s Diamond with a 3-1 win over the Storm.
The Sixers (57-64, 27-24) improved to 16-9 on the year against the Storm and 7-4 in Lake Elsinore’s ballpark with the victory.
Both starters pitched well and neither figured in the decision. Storm southpaw Logan Allen tossed six shutout frames allowing six hits and three walks with six Ks. Sixers starter Luis Pena was dynamic as well as he allowed one run on three hits in 5.1 innings with three walks and 11 Ks.
The lone run came on a solo homer by Storm 2B Chris Baker with two outs in the second inning. It was Baker’s fifth of the season, fourth against Inland Empire. Pena missed tying his career-high in strikeouts (12) which he set on July 2nd at The Diamond in a complete game. He has now punched out 54 Storm batters in 41.0 IP.
Jahmai Jones singled against Lake Elsinore reliever Trevor Frank with one out in the seventh to extend his hitting streak to 17-games and open a rally. Jones stole second and Kyle Survance Jr. was hit by a pitch.
Jordan Zimmerman’s pop fly single to center loaded the bases for Walsh. The Sixers’ first baseman blistered a drive off the wall in center for three RBI and a 3-1 lead. Sam Holland (2-0) tossed 2.2 scoreless, no-hit innings and Nathan Bates locked down his seventh save with a perfect ninth for Inland Empire.
The series continues Tuesday at 6:00 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
