Modesto, CA— Held scoreless through the first eight innings on Monday night, the Quakes rallied late to beat the Modesto Nuts, scoring a 4-2 decision at John Thurman Field in the road-trip opener.
Two in the ninth and then a pair of runs with two outs in the tenth gave the Quakes a third straight win and got them back over .500 in the second half, now with just 18 games remaining in the regular season.
Trailing 2-0 in the ninth, Devan Ahart collected his second of three hits, as he tripled down the right-field line. Erick Mejia followed with an RBI groundout, making it 2-1, but leaving Rancho down to their final out. Will Smith would walk to bring Matt Beaty to the plate, who responded with a single to move Smith to third. Yusniel Diaz then followed with an RBI single to right, tying the game against Modesto reliever Luis s Niebla.
In the tenth, with two outs and Garrett Kennedy aboard on a fielder’s choice, Ahart struck again, doubling to left-center to push Kennedy to third base. Mejia came through with the biggest hit of the night, as he lined a single to left-center against reliever Mark Magliaro (0-2), scoring a pair to give the Quakes the lead at 4-2.
