DJ Peters Hit by a Pitch to Win it for the Quakes over Lake Elsinore
By Zach Bigley
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- With the bases full and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Lake Elsinore’s David Bednar hit Rancho’s DJ Peters and the Quakes won in walk-off fashion, 3-2, on Wednesday night.
With two outs in the frame, Zach Reks reached on an infield single to second before Omar Estevez lined a base hit to left. Luke Raley then walked on four pitches to load the bases for Peters. Bednar plunked Peters on an 0-1 pitch in the left shoulder and the Quakes secured their third consecutive win.
Though the offense came through to win the game late, the Rancho pitching staff was strong on Wednesday.
Adam Bray threw seven innings, only allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six and walking two. He received a no-decision, but Tony Gonsolin (7-5) earned the win by tossing two perfect innings with three strikeouts out of the bullpen.
The Quakes struck first on the offensive side. Raley began the third inning with a double and after traveling to third on a wild pitch, he scored on a Keibert Ruiz sacrifice fly.
The Storm tied the game in the fourth on an RBI triple by Edwin Moreno and took the lead, 2-1, in the sixth with an Austin Allen solo home run.
In the seventh, the Quakes loaded the bases with no outs. Estevez walked on a 3-1 pitch to drive in Ibandel Isabel with the game-tying run, but that was all the Quakes could manage.
Despite the win, the Quakes stranded 11 on the base paths and went just 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Bednar (0-3) took the loss, allowing the one run on two hits and a walk while striking out one over one and two-thirds innings for Lake Elsinore.
Elsewhere in the South Division, Lancaster won its sixth consecutive game to stay one game back of the Quakes on Wednesday, but Inland Empire fell seven games behind the Quakes with 11 games to go after a Wednesday night loss to the JetHawks.
