Lancaster, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino dropped their fifth consecutive game, all at the hands of the Lancaster JetHawks, with a 5-1 loss at The Hangar on Wednesday night. Inland Empire (59-70, 29-30) ran into a tremendous pitching effort from Lancaster southpaw Ty Culbreth who tossed eight innings of one-run work.
The JetHawks (73-56, 35-24) grabbed an early lead against Sixers starter Nate Bertness as Yonathan Daza walked with one out in the first and then stole second. He came home on Sam Hilliard’s RBI single for a 1-0 advantage. The Sixers southpaw held Lancaster down until, after two quick outs to open the fifth,
Wes Rogers singled against Bertness (1-1) and Mylz Jones followed with a walk. Avery Romero then knocked both runners in with a double to right. Robbie Perkins followed with a double scoring Romero for a 4-0 lead. Inland Empire was handcuffed by Culbreth until the sixth when with two outs Jack Kruger drilled a solo shot to center for his first Cal League homer cutting the lead to 4-1.
It proved to be the lone run that Culbreth (6-1) allowed in his eight frames as the University of Texas product surrendered just four hits and two walks with eight Ks. The JetHawks added an insurance run in the seventh against Inland Empire reliever Nathan Bates on another RBI double from Perkins for a 5-1 lead. Marc Magliaro finished off the gem for Lancaster with a perfect ninth inning.
Brandon Diaz had the Sixers’ lone multi-hit night as he finished 2-for-2 with a triple, a walk and a stolen base (his fifth in five attempts). Diaz is 4-for-6 in the series with a triple and a homer.
