Cal League Baseball: Mavs Dump Rancho Cucamonga 9-3 on Thursday as Quakes Continue to Struggle


Adelanto, CA– The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes’ two-game winning came to an end, as they fell to the High Desert Mavericks, 9-3 on Thursday night at Heritage Field in Adelanto.

Rancho is now 1-9 in their last ten games against High Desert, including losing the last eight-in-a-row.

The Mavs scored three runs off of Wes Helsabeck in the first inning. Scott Heineman and Dylan Moore led off with singles, and then Jose Trevino followed with a single of his own to bring home Heineman and make it 1-0 Mavs. After Luke Tendler walked, Jose Cardona and David Lyon hit back-to-back sacrifice fly’s to give High Desert a 3-0 lead.Dora_Media_Wall_9ec6034l_4zhd5uag

The Mavs sent eight men to the plate, and tallied four hits (five base runners) in the first inning.

High Desert scored another run in the third, after Cardona led off with a double and scored when Josh Morgan hit an RBI single to make it 4-0 Mavericks.

Rancho came back with three runs in the fourth inning. Mike Ahmed led off the frame with a solo home run, his 12th of the season, to make it 4-1. The next hitter, Noah Perio, walked, and Matt Beaty reached on an error by the second baseman to put runners at the corners with one out. Yusniel Diaz ripped an RBI single to left field, and Will Smith also added an RBI single to bring the Quakes to within a run, 4-3.

The comeback was short-lived, however. The Mavs scored two more in the sixth, after Elio Castillo hit a sacrifice fly and Michael De Leon blasted a solo home run to left, his eighth of the season to make it 6-3.


Luke Tunder doubled and later scored on a wild pitch in the seventh to make it 7-3 High Desert. In the eighth, the Mavericks scored their final two runs of the night thanks to RBI hits from Tendler and Cardona to extend their lead to 9-3 and winning by that score.

David Ledbetter (6-7) picked up the win for High Desert. He allowed just three runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings. Three of his six wins have come against Rancho Cucamonga. Austin Pettibone and Shane McCain combined for three scoreless innings in relief.

Helsabeck (1-2) was tabbed with the loss for the Quakes. He went six innings, and allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits. Adam Bray allowed a run in his inning of work, and Kevin Brown allowed two runs on four hits in one inning.


The Quakes (21-20, 63-48) will continue their four-game series with the Mavs with game two on Friday night. Rancho will send righty Tommy Bergjans (2-11, 4.79 ERA) to the mound, while the Mavs will counter with lefty Jeff Springs (2-1, 5.47 ERA). First pitch from game two in Adelanto will be 7:05 p.m.
