Cal League Baseball: Quakes Beat Modesto 3-2 in Ten on Thursday

Modesto, CA– One night after blowing a late lead, the Quakes turned the tables on the Modesto Nuts, picking up a ten-inning 3-2 victory on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

Will Smith’s two-out RBI double scored Erick Mejia all the way from first base, as the Quakes took a tenth-inning lead, then held on for their third win in four games at Modesto.

Tied at 2-2 in the tenth, Erick Mejia walked with two outs against Modesto reliever Logan Cozart (1-5). Will Smith followed with a blooper to left field that kicked off the shoulder of shortstop Emerson Jimenez. Mejia scored all the way from first and Smith landed at second with what turned out to be the game-winning double, giving the Quakes a 3-2 lead.

Alex Burgos (3-0), who got the final two outs of the ninth, worked around a one-out walk in the tenth to earn the win.

Starter Adam Bray pitched five scoreless innings for Rancho. Reliever Rob Rogers gave up a run in the sixth as Modesto broke a scoreless tie with a two-out infield single from Forrest Wall, scoring Ryan Stephens to make it 1-0.

Yusniel Diaz tied the game with one swing of the bat in the seventh, as his seventh of the year tied the game against Modesto starter Helmis Rodriguez.

Diaz struck again in the ninth, as after Johan Mieses tripled to open the inning, Diaz singled him home, making it 2-1.

Rogers was unable to hold the lead in the last of the ninth though, as Modesto’s Shane Hoelscher came up with a game-tying single, sending the game to extras, tied at 2-2.

Rancho (28-26, 70-54) will look to make it two in a row and six of their last seven, as they send Tim Shibuya (1-0) to the mound on Friday night in San Jose. The Giants will counter with Mark Reyes (8-7) in the opener, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00pm.

After the seven-game road trip concludes, your Quakes will return to LoanMart Field on Tuesday, August 23rd for another Healthy RC Recycle Tuesday, as fans that bring ten CRV-eligible bottles or cans will receive a free Club Seat Ticket to the game.
