Four Home Runs Power JetHawks over Quakes
By Andrew Chapman
Rancho’s pitching staff allowed four home runs on the night and the offense was unable to overcome a late six-run deficit.
The Quakes opened their fourth consecutive trip to the postseason with Leo Crawford on the mound, coming off six shutout innings his last time out at The Hangar. Crawford was tagged for four runs in the first inning as Tyler Nevin and Bret Bosewell went back-to-back with home runs and Vince Fernandez double home Luis Castro.
Brandon Gold retired the first nine Quakes hitters of the game and did not give up a run until the fifth when Jeren Kendall singled home Connor Wong. Trailing 5-1 in the sixth, Cristian Santana cut the Quakes back within three with an RBI-single to make it 5-2.
Lancaster countered once again in the sixth with a Wes Rodgers RBI-triple to make it 6-2. Crawford (0-1) was lifted from the game following the three-bagger, going 5.2 innings and giving up six earned runs and suffering his first loss with Rancho.
Boswell was locked in on Wednesday night, smashing his second home run of the game off Dan Jagiello in the seventh to make it 8-2 Hawks. Gold (1-0) worked into the eight but was tagged for back-to-back home runs by Omar Estevez and Cody Thomas before being pulled. The right-hander struck out seven over 7.1 innings and earned the win.
Jordan Sheffield came on for Rancho and tossed a scoreless eighth inning while Ben Bowden closed out the final 1.2 innings for Lancaster.
