Cal League Baseball: Rancho Cucamonga Drops Opener to Storm 8-5

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes were unable to recover after surrendering a two-run lead over the Storm on Monday, falling in the opener of a four-game series, 8-5.

Rylan Bannon’s two-run home run put the Quakes in front 2-0 in the third, but starting pitcher Chris Mathewson lost hold of the advantage in the following inning.

Following an out to open the fourth, the Storm struck for four consecutive hits, three which drove in a run, and chased Mathewson from the game after he issued a pair of walks. A Buddy Reed single against reliever Isaac Anderson scored two more inherited runners to the record of Mathewson and the Storm led 5-2.

Rancho cut the deficit to a run in the fifth inning following a Gavin Lux RBI-fielders-choice and a Bannon RBI-single, but the Storm would respond once more.

Michael Cantu homered in the sixth and Kelvin Melean scored on a Reed single putting the Storm back up three at 7-4.

Proceeding his leadoff single, Omar Estevez added the final run of the game for the Quakes when scoring on a wild pitch to make it 8-5. In the ninth, closer Dauris Valdez pitched around a leadoff walk to Thomas and held the lead en route to his fifth save of the year.

The Quakes trailed throughout following the five run inning for Lake Elsinore and Mathewson (1-1) was ultimately charged with the loss.

On the mound for the Storm, Ronald Bolanos (1-3) pitched a season-high 6.1 innings and allowed four of five Rancho runs in his first win of the season.

The Quakes will look to even the four-game series on Tuesday, May 29th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Andrew Sopko (2-3, 3.33 ERA) is scheduled to make his eleventh start of the season for the Quakes and be opposed by Chris Paddack (3-0, 1.01 ERA) of Lake Elsinore.
