Rylan Bannon with Big Day in the Loss to Lake Elsinore
By Andrew Chapman
Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes were unable to recover after surrendering a two-run lead over the Storm on Monday, falling in the opener of a four-game series, 8-5.
Following an out to open the fourth, the Storm struck for four consecutive hits, three which drove in a run, and chased Mathewson from the game after he issued a pair of walks. A Buddy Reed single against reliever Isaac Anderson scored two more inherited runners to the record of Mathewson and the Storm led 5-2.
Rancho cut the deficit to a run in the fifth inning following a Gavin Lux RBI-fielders-choice and a Bannon RBI-single, but the Storm would respond once more.
Michael Cantu homered in the sixth and Kelvin Melean scored on a Reed single putting the Storm back up three at 7-4.
Proceeding his leadoff single, Omar Estevez added the final run of the game for the Quakes when scoring on a wild pitch to make it 8-5. In the ninth, closer Dauris Valdez pitched around a leadoff walk to Thomas and held the lead en route to his fifth save of the year.
On the mound for the Storm, Ronald Bolanos (1-3) pitched a season-high 6.1 innings and allowed four of five Rancho runs in his first win of the season.
The Quakes will look to even the four-game series on Tuesday, May 29th with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Andrew Sopko (2-3, 3.33 ERA) is scheduled to make his eleventh start of the season for the Quakes and be opposed by Chris Paddack (3-0, 1.01 ERA) of Lake Elsinore.
