Cal League Baseball: Storm Beats the Sixty Sixers 6-5 to Take 4 of 7 in their First Home Stand

The Extra-inning Victory on Wednesday Concluded an Exciting Opening to 2018

By Matt Rodriguez

The Storm saved the dramatics for the very last of the seven-game home stand. After jumping out to an early 5-1 lead, a rough inning of walks and miscues saw the 66ers put up a four spot in the top of the seventh to tie the game. The new extra-innings rule was put to the test in front of the home town fans and it paid off in the end for Lake Elsinore.

With a runner starting at second base, a failed bunt attempt resulted in Storm catcher Luis Torrens throwing out the runner at third base. The best chance to give the 66ers a run was squashed, leaving the home team with a huge advantage. Taylor Kohlwey stood at second base when Nate Easley connected for an opposite field base hit off the wall in right field to allow Kohlwey to score easily for the win. Final score Lake Elsinore 6, Inland Empire 5.

The Storm took the series, 2-1, and will hit the road with four games at Rancho Cucamonga and three at San Jose. Lake Elsinore returns to The Diamond for a three-game series against the Stockton Ports.
