Cal League Baseball: Storm Rally Falls Short as Inland Empire Holds on to Win 3-2

Lake Elsinore Strands the Winning Run on Second Base in their 9th Inning Comeback Effort

Little League Day at The Diamond brought excitement to the ballpark with the first Fireworks Friday celebration of the season. The Storm they sent Round Rock, Texas native Mason Thompson to the mound against right-hander Chris Rodriguez for the Inland Empire 66ers. Rodriguez is currently listed as the Angels Number 11 Prospect according to

The visiting 66ers jumped into the lead right off the bat against Thompson courtesy of an RBI single by Kevin Williams Jr. that drove in Orlando Martinez from second base.

Storm bats began the game ice cold as they did not record their first base hit until the bottom of the third thanks to a single by Kelvin Melean. The Angels affiliate added two more runs to the scoreboard in the fourth on a groundball two-run single by Martinez to centerfield as the 66ers went ahead 3-2.

The Storm made a valiant effort and rallied in the bottom of the ninth. A sacrifice fly by Melean scored Eguy Rosario. Then, Esteury Ruiz ‘s single brought home Olivier Basabe.

With the score 3-2 and two runners in scoring position, Tirso Ornelas struck out looking against reliever Jorge Tavarez to end the ball game. Andrew Wantz was the winning pitcher and Tavarez earned the save.

Lake Elsinore fell short to Inland Empire by a final of 3-2. On the bright side for the Eyes, southpaw Travis Radke completed a shutout performance by going four-and-a-third innings and yielding just three hits while striking out four 66ers out of the bullpen.

The Storm look to get back to winning ways tomorrow as the opening homestand continues with Signature Saturday where the first 1,500 fans in attendance receive a 2019 Storm Magnet Schedule presented by Lakeside Pest Control.
