College Football: Defense sets the tone as Mt. San Jacinto College Improves to 3-0 after Defeating Grossmont 27-14

Grossmont got the ball first but couldn’t get anything going. It was the theme of the afternoon for them as the Eagles defense overwhelmed the Griffin offense time and again.

After the Griffins punted, MSJC went on a 70 yd driver and scored on a Sherod White 11 yard run to make it 7-0. Those would turn out to be the only points MSJC’s offense would score until the 4th quarter.

The MSJC defense continued to dominate and scored on an interception by Darryl Moody that he returned 35 yards for a touchdon. After a missed extra point MSJC led 13-0.

Both defenses took control of the game for the rest of the first half. MSJC had a couple of promising drives but could not score as drives were stopped by penalties or defensive stops by Grossmont.

The second half started with MSJC getting the ball leading 13-0. The Eagles converted two 3rd downs on their opening drive, but the drive stalled and they punted. The MSJC defense stepped up again with their third interception of the game by Nate Anderson who returned the ball to the Grossmont 20.

A taunting penalty pushed the ball back to the 35. MSJC’s offense could not convert the great field position into points as they were stopped on 4th down.

Grossmont was forced to punt again and hit a big one that was downed at the 1. MSJC;s offense was able to get one first down, then was forced to punt. A dropped snap and shanked punt put Grossmont in business at the Eagles 19 yd line.

Grossmont completed a pass inside the 2 yard line, setting up first and goal. MSJC’s defense played tough, but Grossmont was just able to reach over the goal line on 4th down from the ½ yd line making it 13-7.

MSJC was able to move the ball on the ensuing drive, but a false start forced a field goal attempt, which was blocked.

The MSJC and Grossmont defense continued to control the game until MSJC’s Javier Luna appeared to finally score a TD, but it was called back on a holding penalty. MSJC continued the drive and was faced with a 4th and one at Grossmont’s 14 yd line. The Eagles decided to go for it and quarterback Brett Virgil was able to get just enough on a QB sneak. Virgil then found CJ Sullivan for a 6 yd TD, pushing the score to 20-7.

Grossmont got the ball back but once again MSJC’s defense was up to the task. Steven Bradshaw and Jeremyah Wislon teamed up to sack Grossmont quaarterback Lukas Arthur, forcing a fumble that Grossmont recovered. Grossmont went for it on 4th down and Joshua Pinon got another sack, forcing a turnover on downs at the Grossmont 32 yd line.

The MSJC offense was able to capitalize on the great field position after Virgil stood in the pocket, and completed a 22 yd pass to Rashoud Shelton, while taking a big hit. Sherod White cruised in from the 3 yard line pushing the lead to 27-7 with just over a minute left.

Grossmont was able to take advantage of some confusion as MSJC’s backups were in the game. Grossmont scored on a 35 yd TD pass from Arthur to Dominick Hudson to close to 27-14. The Eagles recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock.

MSJC offense was led by Brett Virgil who was 20-36 for 239 yards and 1 TD pass. He also had 50 yards on the ground. Sherod White finished with 102 yards rushing and 2 TDs. CJ Sullivan caught 7 passes for 94 yards and a score, Javier Luna caught 6 passes for 68 yards and Chambers ad three receptions.

MSJC’s defense was the star of the game in holding Grossmont to just 186 yards total offense, 67 of which came against the backups on the final drive. They were led by a defensive front the held Grossmont to 27 yds rushing on 24 attempts.

Darryl Moody had 2 interception, including one he returned to a TD. Nate Anderson also had an interception. Steven Bradshaw finished with 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and forced fumble.Dallas Frederick had 7 tackles, Jeremyah Wilson had 4 tackles, including ½ sack and a forced fumble and Joshua Pinon had 2 tackles and sack.
