A long and challenging non-conference slate came to a close Sunday afternoon for the UC Riverside Women’s Soccer Team (2-7-1) as the Highlanders fell 2-0 to host Santa Clara (6-5-0).
The Broncos were in control from the start and outshot the Highlanders (2-7-1) 26-4 but put just nine of their shots on goal, keeping the game close throughout. Santa Clara also earned nine corners and didn’t surrender any but couldn’t take advantage of any of their set pieces.
The scoring got going early on a Bronco goal by Kelsey Turnbow in the fourth minute. Kelcie Hedge found Turnbow in the box and she finished inside the left post to make it 1-0.
The Broncos then made it 2-0 in the 28th. Maddy Gonzalez punched in a ball from the center of the box, with Skylar Smith and Kaitlyn Parcell picking up the assists.
UC Riverside’s first shot didn’t come until a free kick just outside the box in the 65th minute. The Highlanders best scoring chance came two minutes later when Lucy Alcala had a one-on-one with the Bronco keeper but sent her shot wide.
Despite allowing two goals, freshman Caela Kaio collected a career-high seven saves.
UC Riverside now begins its Big West campaign beginning this Thursday on the road at UC Irvine.
