College Soccer: UC Riverside Loses Tough One to the University of Portland 2-1

Next Up for the Highlanders is UC Irvine

The UC Riverside Men’s soccer (5-4-2)lost to the University of Portland (5-3-1) in a game that saw the Highlanders fall down early but claw back late. The team was unable to finish the comeback as they dropped the match 2-1.

The Pilots jumped on the scoreboard early as they capitalized on the Highlander’s mishaps. They scored a goal on a penalty kick by Jacobo Reyes just past the 6 minute mark to take a quick 1-0 lead.

Luke Hendel of Portland put the home team up 2-0 when he scored his third goal of the season. Although the Highlanders were able to get four shots up, none of them found the back of the net.

UCR came out with a sense of urgency in the second half as they outshot the Pilots 12-5 in the second half. The team didn’t have any corner kicks in the first half but their aggression led to five in the second half.

Junior forward Roberto Garcia-Vargas put the Highlanders on the board in the 75th minute on a penalty kick. It was Garcia-Vargas’ third goal of the season.  

The team had three shots in the last 11 minutes of regulation to try and tie it up but weren’t able to capitalize and were unable to cap off their comeback.

UCR looks to bounce back at UCI on Wednesday, October 9. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.
