College Softball: UC Riverside Beats Cal State Northridge 5-1 Sunday

The Highlanders take the Series on Another Two-Way Performance from Melanie Olmos

Another spectacular day for junior pitcher Melanie Olmos gave UC Riverside a game three and the series win over CSUN as the Highlanders downed the Matadors 5-1. Olmos tossed a one-run game and provided her own run support with a homer and three RBI on Saturday. On Sunday she provided CSUN with a bit of deja vu, tossing yet another one-run game and collecting a two-run home run.

Olmos was brilliant from the circle for UCR going five complete and allowing just one earned and three hits while striking out eight. She finishes the series with an impressive pair of outing totaling 12 IP, a 1.17 ERA, eight strikeouts, and most importantly, two wins. Batters could not figure her out hitting just .167.

The Highlander bats got going as early as they could as Emma Ramelot broke the scoreless tie in the first frame notching a two-run double to right for a 2-0 lead. This was just the third basemen’s second hit of the series, but it proved to be an important one for UCR.

Both teams went quietly after that until the fourth inning where senior second basemen Brittney Garcia crushed her second triple of the year to score junior Danielle Ortega from second and extend the lead 3-0.

The Matadors finally got something working in the sixth inning against Olmos, but unfortunately for CSUN, junior Jacy Boles would enter the game in relief and limit to damage to just one run, charged to Olmos, as Boles picked up her fourth save of the year.

Up 3-1 with the Matadors seeming to pick up the pace, Olmos put the nail in the coffin for the Highlanders blasting a home run to left field. She has not registered knocks in back-to-back games and has five on the season, which ranks second on the team.

Garcia finished the day going 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and freshman Nadia Witt added a 2-for-4 mark.

Jillian James was saddled with the loss for Northridge.

UCR will look to keep it going at home this weekend as they host UC Davis.
