Errors Cost the Highlanders Game One with the Aggies
Despite four total runs scoring Friday afternoon, game one of the series between UC Riverside and visiting UC Davis was a true pitchers’ duel as none of the runs registered were earned. The Highlanders gave themselves opportunities to win the game, but in the end, a pair of defensive errors would decide the series opener with the Aggies taking it 3-1.
The pitching efforts from UCR would come by way of committee with junior Melanie Olmos earning the start and tossing two scoreless before an outfield error allowed the first run of the day to score and extend the inning.
Junior Jacy Boles would finish the final 4.1 innings allowing zero earned, like Olmos. The two hurlers allowed just three hits between them, but seven walks would give UC Davis the necessary opportunities to take the game.
The Aggies struck first scoring two in the third frame but the Highlanders were quick to punch back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Emma Ramelot posted one of the team’s five hits singling and scoring freshman Sami Demyon from second to cut the lead in half.
The team’s five hits were spread out among five different Highlanders, but UC Davis would take game one 3-1.
The Highlanders will look to bounce back tomorrow in a Saturday doubleheader.
