College Softball: UC Riverside Splits Doubleheader with Cal State Northridge

Junior Melanie Olmos Does it All in the Highlanders Victory Over CSUN

The UC Riverside Softball Team split its series opening doubleheader with CSUN Saturday afternoon as the Highlanders fell 4-0 in game one, but bounced back with a dominant 8-1 victory in game two. UCR’s offense struggled in the opener, but combined active bats mixed with a strong pitching performance from junior Melanie Olmos would grant the team a statement win to close out the day.

Game One

The first matchup with the Matadors was a pitching duel throughout most of the game as both teams were held scoreless through three innings. Junior Jacy Boles got the start and tossed a solid six innings allowing four runs and seven hits, but unfortunately was not gifted run suport from the Highlander bats.

The Matadors would find home in each of the final three innings of play to take the game 4-0.

Senior Hannah Rodriguez and junior Sarah Parten registered the only hits on the day for the Highlanders.

Game Two

After being silenced in game one, the Highlander offense erupted in game two scoring three runs in the first three innings and five run in the final three.

Olmos took the circle and tossed an absolute gem allowing just one run in the first inning before shutting out the Matadors in the final six on her way to a complete game, four-hit win with four strikeouts. She got it going on the offensive end as well providing her own run support going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Parten struck again in game two and got the scoring started for UCR with a two-RBI single to left in the first inning. Heads up base-running from freshman Nadia Witt gave the Highlanders a 3-1 lead in the third as she found home on a Matador error.

Olmos added her first RBI in the fifth frame to make it 4-1 and a two-run homer in the 7th would give her team a commanding lead. Freshman Haylee Kela finished off the day with a two-run shot herself, the center fielder’s second of her young career.

Rodriguez, Olmos, Parten, and junior Danielle Ortega all registered two hits a piece in the game two with Rodriguez putting up an impressive two-for three with two walks line. Junior Emma Ramelot added a hit, a walk, and a pair of runs as well.

The rubber match is set for Sunday at 1 PM.
