The Wolfpack Looking to Repeat as State Girls & Boys Team Champions
The CIF State Cross Country Championship Meet is this Saturday and three Southwestern League teams are headed to Fresno to compete. Great Oak’s Girls and Boys teams swept the CIF Southern Section Championships last week. The Wolfpack won both the Girls and Boys State Championships last year.
The Great Oak Girls won their first Southwestern League title in 2008 and have dominated the field ever since. The Wolfpack has won 5 of the last 6 CIF Sectionals and have been crowned State Champions 4 of the last 5 years.
The Wolfpack girls had a 124-point margin of victory over second place Vista Murrieta in last week’s CIF SS Finals. Junior Evelyn Mandel led Great Oak with a fourth place finish, sophomore Sandra Pflughoft eighth, juniors Kiyena Beatty ninth, Nicole Rice twelfth and senior Emily Clause was thirteenth. Destiny Collins, one of Great Oak’s top runners was hampered with shin splints finished 37th.
Vista Murrieta finished 7th in the State Championships in 2014, 10th in 2013 and 2012. The Broncos highest finish was in 2011 when they placed 2nd .
The Wolfpack Boys beat Dana Hills by 23 points to win their CIF Southern Section Championship Title. Senior Spencer Dodds finished second in the race, Cole Spencer fourth, Issac Cortez eighth and Solomon Fountain thirteenth. Tony Robinson and Brandon Shields rounded out the Wolfpack team.
The meet begins at 8:30 am Saturday morning. The weather is expected to be in the 50’s.
