Investigators Took Verdell Simon into Custody at Work in the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Norco a Day Later
On Thursday, June 13, 2019, at 1730 PM, deputies assigned to the Eastvale Police Department responded to a strong-arm robbery at the Vons Grocery store, located in the 6100 block of Hamner Ave in the city of Eastvale.
Initial reports indicated Vons security observed an individual inside the business taking items and concealing them by placing them inside a bag. Vons security identified themselves and confronted the suspect, who was later identified as 30-year old Verdell Simon, from Victorville. Simon did not cooperate with security’s commands and he ran toward the store exit, bypassing the cashiers without paying.
Vons security stopped Simon outside and advised him he did not pay for the items and told him he needed to return inside to pay. Simultaneously, Vons security reached for the stolen items to remove from Simon’s possession. Subsequently, Simon and Vons security tugged back and forth with the items.
A physical skirmish ensued, and Simon’s eventually pushed a Vons security loss prevention officer causing her to lose her balance and fall to the ground. Simon fled the scene on foot toward an unknown location.
Deputies arrived and established a perimeter around the area and searched for Simon, but they did not locate him. During the ongoing investigation, it was learned that Simon had a lanyard with his identification and photo which was removed during the skirmish and was left at the scene.
On Friday, June 14, 2019, Deputies from the Eastvale Police Special Enforcement Team conducted a follow up investigation. They obtained Simon’s work address along with other information leading to his identification and whereabouts.
They responded to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center located in the 4100 block of Hamner, In the city of Eastvale. Simon was taken into custody and transported to the Robert Presley Detention Center on the felony charge of robbery.
