We tried the Malasadas at Da Coconut Cafe in Temecula and were amazed. These sugar-dusted, deep-fried Portuguese doughnuts, an essential comfort food in Hawaii. They were simply decadent and delicious. The rest of the menu didn’t disappoint.

We started our Island adventure with Loco Moco. The loco moco here consisted of white rice with a teriyaki marinated hamburger patty, topped with a fried egg, and drenched in a wonderful, rich brown gravy. Wow, absolutely like being back in Hawaii. We’ve got the recipe and will share it with you soon. The restaurant also has Spam with scrambled eggs and rice. Next time.

Poke began with fishermen seasoning the little pieces of fish from their catch to serve as a snack. At Da Coconut Cafe it is now a delicious art. They have six different flavors to choose from. Pur favorite was the Spicy Mayo Bowl. It came with a special Sriracha mayo and was served with crab and seaweed salad, green onions, cucumbers, ginger and masago.

The Chicken Katsu and Coconut Curry was exceptional. They take a Japanese style deep fried panko breaded cutlet and cover it with a wonderful coconut curry sauce. It was served with lumpia, 2 scoops rice, macaroni salad, and a crab puff.

The Meat Jun is a Korean Dish that is now a Island staple. It was the best we have ever had on the mainland. Marinated thin slices of beef are dipped in an egg batter and fried. It’s served with a delicious dipping sauce. It “Broke Da Mouth”, really.

There are also Spam and Portuguese sausage musubis. Hawaiian Bento Boxes, Oha (Polynesian Poke), Shot Ribs and other Island goodies to choose from. They also have a great selection of Hawaiian cookie and candies available.
