The Wolfpack’s Destiny Collins Bounces Back from Her Injury to Finish First and Lead the Wolfpack Girls Past Davis
The Wolfpack set new standards for the future as they swept both the Boys and Girls Cross Country Division I CIF State titles for the second consecutive year. The Great Oak Girls won their first Southwestern League title in 2008 and have been dominant ever since. The Wolfpack has won 6 of the last 7 CIF Sectionals and have been crowned State Champions 5 of the last 6 years.
“The girls team didn’t run the race we were hoping for but as champions do, they found a way to win” said Coach Soles. “Destiny bouncing back from a tough race to lead the team and win the individual title is about as amazing as it gets. Many people wrote her off, but destiny knew what she planned to do and executed well. The girls may have been looking forward to NXN and almost got caught by a very game Davis girls team”.
This year the Great Oak Girls were led by senior Destiny Collins who battled injuries that have been hampering her all season. Collins finished the race in first place with a time of 17.09.40. Nicole Rice, Sandra Pflughoft, Kiyena Beatty, Emily Clause, Sydney Belus and Evelyn Mandel all finished strong as the Wolfpack edged Davis by 2-points to win the State Title.
“The Davis girls ran a near-perfect race and just missed 1st place” said Dystat’s Donal Pearce. ” You know both teams did awesome since Great Oak broke the course record and barely won. Vista Murrieta Bronco Girls Team finished 13th this year”.
“I’ve been having shin splints for the past month and half and it’s been tough having to train through it.” said Destiny Collins. “Today I told myself that I wasn’t going to let the pain get to me and that I was going to run my hardest for myself, for my teammates, for everyone and I’m happy I was able to do that! I feel really good! It’s such a huge accomplishment. It’s my first individual cross country title and I’m so happy it came running my last time on the Woodward Park course! It came after a tough season mentally and physically and it really is the cherry on top of the cake for my CIF cross country career”.
” I think the boys performance was amazing, considering we had 4 guys in the top 12 in one of the toughest races in the country” said Soles. “Seeing all 7 guys run tough and show how good this team can be is very exciting for us going into NXN. Our goal all season has been to win NXN and that will be our focus going forward”.
The Wolfpack Boys team beat Dana Hills 43-65 to repeat as State Champions. Spencer Dodds, Cole Spencer and Issac Cortes led Great Oak, finishing 3ed, 5th and 7th in the race. Soloman Fountain, Nelson Quintana and Tony Robinson helped bring the State Championship back to Temecula.
“All told, I couldn’t be prouder of our kids today! Everyone met the call and that is all you can ask for as a coach ” added Soles.. Congratulations Coach, and good luck at the Nationals.
