Hemet Police & Federal Agents Arrest the Owner of this Local Business
Orlando Ontivero-Angulo, a 39 year old resident of San Jacinto was arrested this morning by Hemet Police Officers. The arrest came as a result of an investigation into Ontivero-Angulo’s business – La Perla Market, located in the 800 block of E. Florida Ave. in the City of Hemet.
Earlier this year, Hemet Police R.O.C.S. Detectives (Restoring Our Community Strategy), received information that the market was conducting fraudulent Electronic Benefits Transfers (EBT). R.O.C.S.
Detectives reached out to federal and state partners and several undercover operations were conducted. These operations discovered that fraudulent EBT transactions were being conducted by the owner at the location and that other violations were occurring.
The EBT fraud included accepting EBT for unauthorized purchases and overcharging for authorized EBT purchases, with the owner pocketing the money. R.O.C.S. Detectives obtained search warrants for Ontivero-Angulo’s home in San Jacinto and for his business in Hemet.
Just after 7:00 am on Wednesday, November 7th, members of the Hemet Police Department, along with state and federal law enforcement agencies served the warrants. Evidence was collected from both locations and Ontivero-Angulo was arrested for E.B.T. fraud. Initial investigation suggests that at least $50,000.00 may have been fraudulently charged through EBT. As the investigation continues, additional charges may be added.
After the officers completed their search of the business, the Riverside County Department of Environmental Health (D.E.H.) conducted an inspection of the business and determined that it was unsafe to remain open. D.E.H. closed the business until it can be brought into compliance.
Captain Glen Brock who oversees the Hemet Police Department’s Community Services Division said: “This crime is particularly despicable. This man is taking advantage of families who truly need the funds this program provides, the tax payers are the real victims here.”
