High School Football: Temescal Canyon Home against Elsinore to Close Out the 2016 Regular Season


The Titans and Tigers Face off for Third Place in the Sunbelt League

14292329_1079042718882507_5375575381313012257_nTemescal Canyon will be home Friday night to wrap up the 2016 regular season against arch rival Elsinore. “This is the game we look forward to every season” said Temescal Canyon Coach Phil Cohen earlier in the year about one of the most intense crosstown rivalries in the Inland Empire.”This is the one we want to win the most”.

14520337_520372608168098_6870206435852872552_nThe Titans are 3-5-1 overall and currently tied for third place with Elsinore in the Sunbelt with identical 2-2 records. The Tigers are 6-3 overall and were recently ranked tenth in this week’s CIF Southern Section Division 6 Polls. There used to be a Mayor’s Cup Trophy but it has long since been misplaced, as the last time it changed hands was in 2007. That was the last time that Temescal Canyon beat Elsinore. The Tigers have won the “Cup” every year since then, although the last two games have been won by a single touchdown.

The senior tandem of Anthony Reyes and Brandon Payne are the primary backs that move the chains on the ground for Elsinore. The duo has combined to gain 2,302 yards on the ground. Reyes is the Tigers scoring leader with23 touchdowns.14591811_520372434834782_4645579628317116513_n

Junior Tim Jakell is the Tiger quarterback and has thrown five touchdown passes, three of them to Reyes who also leads the team with 10 catches. He has also thrown one each to junior Isaiah Hobson and senior Hunter Patterson14581530_520372438168115_1718480908763648856_n

Senior Gabe Gomez, juniors Alston Ullmer , Gabe Ramirez and Isiah Hobson anchor the Elsinore defense. Senior Brandon Payne leads the team with 5 sacks and junior Gilbert Agosto has 2 interceptions.

Temescal Canyon is coming off a 16-14 victory over Perris last week. The Titans are 2-4-1 overall and ready to make some noise in the Sunbelt.

Sophomore quarterback Jaden Gomez is the starter and has thrown 89 completions for 964 yards and 10 TDs. His favorite targets are seniors Landon Lopera and Jason Stepanek. Junior Chris Fey has devloped into one of Gomez’s key targets.

Gomez has also run for 421 yards and 5 touchdowns. Fellow sophomore Brandon Clemons has gained 434 yards on 120 carries.

Senior Justin Mitts, junior Chris Fey and sophomore Khristian Demarco anchor the Titan defense. Senior Braydon Barry is the Titan Sack leader and Demarco leads Temescal Canyon in picks.
