Senior Zac Filos Comes in to Pitch the Rams Past the Lancers and as Murrieta Mesa Advances to face West Ranch
Murrieta Mesa Coach Wade Bryne wasted no time in replacing his pitchers Friday night as the Rams beat Orange Lutheran and advanced to the Semifinals of the 2016 CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championships. Bryn went to Filos after pulling starter Tony Carreon, and relievers Nate Stillinovich and Kevin Palm after just 2 innings.
“Filos is a workhorse and deserves the praise, he is probably the most overlooked player in our program and needs to be on the radar of every college coach around,” said Wade. Filos went on the linit the Lancers to three runs on three hits and struck out five.
The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 run in the second inning. Austen Salcedo, Caiden Matkins and Filos were driven in by Kevin Palm and Justin Randle. The Lancers came back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.
Murrieta brought another three runs across the plate in the third to make it a 6-1 game. Brad Prebay and Filos drove in the Ram runs and were helped by two throwing errors by Lancer shortstop Brenden Avventino.
Filos allowed three runs in the fifth to make it a 6-4 game but finished strong for the victory. Luke Matson was the losing pitcher for Orange Lutheran. He gave up six runs in 3 1/3 innings, walked two and struck out two Rams.
“Our team is well prepared and our coaching staff is a major reason why we are so successful,” added Wade. “We feed off each other, make moves together, and back each other up when tough decisions have to be made. Our goal all year long has to win the last game of the season”
The Rams will face West Ranch in the semifinals on Tuesday. The Wildcats are 24-8 overall and stunned El Toro 2-1, the third ranked team in the state in the quarterfinals.
