The Loss Snaps the Eagles 14 Game Winning Streak
By Lynn Guerin
Wednesday evening was not a good night for the for the Rancho Christian Eagles varsity baseball team in San Juan Capistrano. For the first time since March 26th they lost.
The loss snapped a 14 game winning streak. They were defeated by another flock of Eagles, a very good Division 3 team Capo Valley Christian by a score of 10-0. Rancho had not given up double digit runs all season.
Rancho Christian managed to only get 2 hits, a double by Taylor Tosches and a single by Micah Gaukler. Rancho batters struck out 13 times-their season high. Only four other batters reached base, 2 by walks , one on a catcher’s interference call., and one on an error. The last 6 Rancho hitters of the game all struck-out.
Since the offense was a no show against 3 good Capo pitchers- starter Sterling LoCicero who went five innings, and relievers Carson Matthews and Josh Randall who both pitched one inning and both struck out the side; the defense and pitching needed to be pristine.
Actually the pitching was stronger than the score indicated. Joey Hauck started and went two innings but had little if any support from the field. Capo scored 9 of their runs in the first two innings , but only one of them was earned. Five big and very untimely errors by Rancho infielders and outfielders made the difference in the final outcome, and those miscues spelled doom.
Eli Goodwin and Danny Meraz pitched well holding Capo to only one run from the 3rd inning on, giving up only 3 hits and striking out five between them. But with the bats silent and the base paths empty, Rancho’s 20 win of the season would have to wait.
Coach Tony Nobiensky will try to glue the defense back together and get the bats hot as Rancho Christian takes on Santa Rosa Academy Thursday for the South Valley League Championship.
The Eagles comes in to the game with a 9-0 league record. Santa Rosa is 8-1 in league play, with its only loss coming at the hands of Rancho Christian back on April 19th , by a score of 13-2.
Game time is 3:30 pm, at The Rancho diamond.
