The Rancho Christian Eagles picked up their third win of the season in a very unlikely fashion at the Eagles Nest Friday afternoon, defeating Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley 7-5.
It was a five run second inning for Rancho that made the difference in the game. And those runs came without a single hit in the inning. Five walks-2 infield errors, 2 hit batters and a wild pitch gave Rancho a 5-1 lead at the end of the second inning.
Rancho pushed the lead to 6-1 after 3 innings on a back to back singles by Joey Hauck and Taylor Tosches and a double by Danny Meraz. That lead held for Rancho until the top of the 6th inning.
Trevor Jones started on the mound for Rancho and pitched 5 very strong innings. Jones gave up only one run, scattering 7 hits, walking only one with 2 strikeouts. Jones gave way to Cole Guerin in the sixth who proceeded to walk the first batter on 4 pitches.
That batter appeared to be picked off but an errant throw by Guerin allowed the runner to get to third. The next batter flied deep to center bringing in Canyon’s second run. A sharp single by Garcia and a two run bomb by Spencer over the right field screen brought the score to 6-4.It also forced manager Tony Nobiensky to make a pitching change bringing in Colton Bulger
Bulger put out the fire getting the next two batters on a ground out and a fly ball to right field where Danny Meraz made a nice running catch.
Canyon Springs pushed one run across in the top of the seventh on a hit batter, a single and a sacrifice fly. But Bulger rose to the occasion and struck out the final two batters to preserve the Rancho win. Final score Rancho 7-Canyon Springs 5. Trevor Jones got the win…Colton Bulger picked up his first save of the young season.
Rancho returns to action Tuesday afternoon when the Eagles travel to San Juan Capistrano to take on the Tartans of St. Margaret’s at 3:30 pm.
