HS Basketball: The 24th Annual Nighthawk Classic Gets Underway



Murrieta Mesa Falls to Beaumont 65-58 and Norco Beats Elsinore 63-53 in Monday’s Opening Games of the Tournament

The 24th Annual Nighthawk Boys Basketball Classic got underway Monday as Norco defeated Esinore 63-53 in the opening game of the tournament. Beaumont rolled past Murrieta Mesa 65-58 in the second game. The eight-team tournament Murrieta Valley High includes Murrieta Valley, Murrieta Mesa and Great Oak from the Southwestern League, Elsinore, Norco, Beaumont , La Sierra and last year’s Champions, Rancho Verde.

Norco senior captain Cesar Meza led the Cougars with 32 points. Sophomore Joseph Agula added 10 points and junior Calleb Jacobs scored 9. Seniors Frankie Castenada and Isaiah Wade scored 6 and 5 points against Elsinore.

The Tigers were led by senior Dakota Navarret’s 15 points. Anthony Reyes scored 14, junior Donald Fabela dropped in 11 and senior ZachLipps added 7 more for Elsinore.thumbnail_oyster-wednesday-sample-2-231x300

Junior CJ Clemons scored 14 points to lead Beaumont over the Rams. Roberto Rodriguez scored 13, Kyle Phillips 11 and Jalen January 10 more…all are seniors.

Mesa senior point guard Anthony Routh led all scorers with 27 points. Junior Gio Sanders added 12, senior Brandon Mantosh 8 and senior JT Rowler 5 points against the Cougars.

The tournament continues today with Beaumont facing Great Oak at 4pm, Rancho Verde against Elsinore at 5:30 and La Sierra battling Murrieta Valley at 7pm.

On Wednesday Great Oak takes on La Sierra in the 4:00 game, Murrieta Mesa faces Rancho Verde at 5:30 and Norco will play Murrieta Valley in the late game.

The Senifinal round will begin at 3:00 on Friday and the Finals are on Saturday.
