Michael Bertulfo has been named the new Head Basketball Coach at Murrieta Mesa High School. Bertulfo has spent the last four years coaching the junior varsity team for the Rams. He replaces coach Chris Jones who was 61-58 in his four years at Murrieta Mesa.

After a thorough search and multiple days of interviews I am thrilled to announce that this process has landed us right back at home” said Murrieta Mesa Athletic Director John Broussard. That’s right, our next varsity coach will be Mesa’s own Coach Bertuflo.”

Bertulfo came to Murrieta Mesa in 2015. Bertulfo played varsity basketball at Vista Murrieta winning a league title in 2008. He then had two years of experience as an assistant in the Vista Murrieta basketball program. While at Vista Murrieta he helped lead the Bronco freshman team to a League Championship in 2014 and the JV team to another League Championship in 2015.

After following the prior seasons Mesa Basketball has achieved, everyone expects me to match or top the success already established” said the new head coach. “In all honesty, I’m here to find my own way”.

“I anticipate establishing a new culture here at Mesa in my first year in this position. This culture resembles a winning atmosphere to empower players by give them the tools to be successful on and off the court” said Bertulfo . “I believe that structure, consistency, and love will catapult my program to reach a deeper depth than simply winning basketball games”.

More so than ever we felt it important our next coach possess a strong knowledge of the Mesa culture along with an eagerness to see it climb to new heights. Coach Bertuflo’s passion for the game of basketball is unquestioned and it’s that obsession that we feel confident will maximize our athletes’ individual talents and our teams collective goals” said Broussard.

“ He has a strong track record as the JV coach over the last 4 years, collecting league titles amongst other impressive program feats. I am proud of his individual growth and excited to see him continue that path during this new chapter”

The Rams were 16-13 under Jones last year. They lost to Beaumont in the first round of the CIF Southern Section 2A Division. The new coach looks to improve Murrieta Mesa’s program next season. “We will be competitive, hardworking, and disciplined which will translate into a competitive basketball program” Bertuflo said.

The most desirable attribute the new coach possess when it comes to a program leader is his sheer love and mentor like characteristics when it comes to his relationships with his players” added Broussard. “Our program challenge starts immediately…Our quest to the top starts today, everyone has a role”.
