Shamar Wright Scores 19 Points to Lead the Rams Past the Saints
Murrieta Mesa beat Crean Lutheran 53-50 in the CIF State Division III Boys Basketball Regional Championship Playoffs. The Rams will advance to play Bishop Amat Tuesday in the Regional Semifinals.
“The Guys played another great game last night…..very proud of their resilience as we struggled to find good rhythm on the offensive side for much of the night” said Murrieta Mesa Coach Chris Jones. “They really hung in there though, stuck together and stuck to what we teach. In the 4th quarter we took advantage of a few key situations and our guys elevated their play another notch with our season on the line”.
“Can’t say enough about all of them! Jonah Zandi made a couple free throws late but also made one of the great hustle plays of the season to keep the momentum on our side. Shamar and Lamar teamed up for a couple offensive plays that ended up in dunks when the pressure was at its height. Cameron Rente and Gio Sanders broke the Crean Lutheran pressure well in the 4th while also playing superb defense to limit Crean’s points down the stretch”.
The Rams fell behind 35-27 in the third quarter, but Murrieta Mesa got hot and went on a 15-0 run to take the lead 42-35 halfway through the fourth quarter. Jonah Zandi made two clutch free throws with 17 seconds remaining to give the Rams a 53-50 victory.
“Devin Fortune did a terrific job early in the game to keep us alive and in the game when we were struggling. His defense and rebounding were difference makers” added Coach Jones .
“It was a great night for our team yet again…..we have really been tested and earned these 2 Regional wins. We are excited to play again on Tuesday night to see if we can advance to the SoCal Championship”.
Murrieta Mesa will face Bishop Amat at 7pm. The Lancers are 28-6 this year.
