The Rams Magical Season Comes to an End
Murrieta Mesa’s magical season came to an end Tuesday night in La Puente. The Rams lost to Bishop Amat in the CIF Division III Regional Semifinal game 60-51. The loss ended the team’s historic record breaking season.
Murrieta Mesa fell behind 36-15 at the half as Bishop Amat used an 18-0 run in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. The Rams battled back and cut Bishop Amat’s 21-point lead at halftime to 11 late in the third quarter. Trailing 56-48 with 1:48 to go in the game, the Rams just could not overcome the Lancer lead.
“We told our guys at halftime to get this game around ten points going to the fourth and we did that to give ourselves a chance,” said Murrieta Mesa Coach Chris Jones. “I thought we had our opportunity in the last few minutes, but we missed some shots and they were a little quicker to loose balls and we just didn’t get there.”
Junior Devin Fortune was the scoring leader for Murrieta Mesa with 14 points. He also grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the Rams. Gio Sanders scored 11 points. The senior also had 2 assists. Sophomore Anthony Salek added 9 points for the Rams.
The Lancers defense did an excellent job containing the Rams top scorer, 6-foot-7 senior Shamar Wright. Wright who averaged 19.3 points a game was held to just 4. Twin brother Lamar scored just 6 points for the Rams.
Bishop Amat senior Ismael Arellano scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Lancer attack. Seniors Bailey Lopez added 13 points, Vince Rodriguez had 9 and Jonathan Aguirre scored 8 points. Bishop Amat was red hot and hit nine 3-pointers Wednesday night.
The Rams end the season with a 26-10 record. They played in a school record four CIF Southern Section Division 3 Playoff games and three State Regional contest.
Bishop Amat advances to play in Saturday’s CIF Regional State Championship game. The Lancers will face Notre Dame of Riverside who they lost to earlier on March 2nd in the CIF Southern Section Division 3A championship 51-46.
