HS Basketball: Rancho Christian Stunned by Bishop Montgomery 54-50 in the CIF Southern Section Open Division Playoffs


The Eagles will Face Etiwanda on Tuesday as the Open Division Pool-Play Continues

Rancho Christian was stunned Saturday night as Number 8-seeded Bishop Montgomery finished strong to win the opening game of the CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs 54-50. The game was played in front of a packed crowd at Chaparral High School.

The Eagles started out strong and controlled the rhythm of the game well into the final period. Rancho Christian jumped out to a 11-4 lead in the first period. Bishop Montgomery battled back to chisel the Eagles lead to 5 points with a 19 point effort.

The Knights closed the gap to 3 points, outscoring Rancho Christian 14-12 in the third period and by the start of the fourth it was 40-37. Senior guard Gianni Hunt caught fire in the final period, scoring 8 points to lead the Knights passed the stunned Eagles. Jordan Archie nailed two crucial 3 pointers in the period to put the game away for Bishop Montgomery. The Knights out scored the Eagles in all three periods after the first.

The Knights top scorer for the evening was Gianni Hunt who ended the game with 15 points. Jordan Archie had four 3-pointers and finished with 14, Will Crawford scored 9 points and Isaiah Johnson added 8 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Both Josh Vasquez and Bradley Ezewiro scored 3 points while Jalen Vazquez ended with 2.

“Bishop Montgomery is a great team and very well-coached. All the credit to them,” said Rancho Christian coach Ray Barefield . “We just did not come to play tonight.”

Evan Mobley led the Rancho Christian attack. The junior finished with 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Point guard Dominick Harris added 12 points and senior Isaiah Mobley grabbed 12 rebounds while scoring 8 points for the Eagles.

Rounding out the scoring for Rancho Christian, Jordan Montgomery scored 7 points, Jaden Byers 5, Bryson Stephens 3 and Luke Turner 2 points.

The CIF Open Division is a round robin so Rancho Christian will advance to face Etiwanda at home on Tuesday night. The site in Temecula is yet to be determined.

 

 

 

The Eagles can still make it to the Open Division championship game. Rancho Christian must win their final two pool-play games. They must also hope that Bishop Montgomery loses to Rancho Verde Tuesday, and Etiwanda after that.

Bishop Montgomery will play at Rancho Verde in Moreno Valley on Tuesday night.
