HS Basketball: Slow Start Dooms Murrieta Valley against Murrieta Mesa

The Rams Hold Off the Nighthawk’s Late Surge to Win 47-44

Murrieta Mesa defeated Murrieta Valley Wednesday night to solidify their grasp on third place in the Southwestern league. The Rams improved their league record to 5-4 and are tied with Chaparrral for the last automatic CIF Southern Section berth.

The difference in the game was all in the first period. Murrieta Mesa jumped out to a 16-4 lead and never looked back. The Nighthawk’s outscored the Rams in every period after their slow start, 16-3 in the second, 15-11 in the third and 9-7 in the last. A frustrated Murrieta Valley team lost their 9th league game in a row.

Junior Emily Gonzalez led the Ram attack with 13 points Sophomore Kayli Klemp added another 9 and senior Valerie Arias 6. Freshman Mia Golovich, sophomore Rayven Crook and junior Shelbee Burrier each scored 5 points. Sophomore Sydney Ormiston and freshman Kaylee Van Betuw scored 2 points apeice.

Murrieta Valley stats will be posted as they become available.

In other Southwestern league action, Vista Murrieta took control of first place by beating Great Oak 48-43. Chaparral defeated Temecula Valley 57-50.

Friday night is the end of the 2019 regular season. The Nighthawks will battle Vista Murrieta, Chaparral plays powerful Great Oak and the Rams and Temecula Valley face off.
