HS Basketball: Two Local Teams Survive Round One of the CIF Southern Section Championship Playoffs…Temecula Valley & Orange Vista


Rancho Christian Plays Bishop Montgomery in the CIF Open Division Tonight

Temecula Valley was home against Notre Dame in the opening round of the 2019 CIF Southern Section Division 2AA Championship Playoffs. It was an epic contest, as the Golden Bears battled the Knights down to the wire. Temecula slipped past a very determined Knights team 92-91 to advance to round 2 of the tournament.

Temecula Valley was one of two local teams to win Friday night. Orange Vista from Perris crushed California Military Institute 81-42. The Coyotes are now 20-7 this season and advance to face Loara High school in the round 2 of the Division 4A playoffs.

Eleven other High Schools in the area had their CIF Southern Section Championship hopes ended. Rancho Christian will plays Bishop Montgomery in the prestigious Open Division Tonight.

In the Division 2A playoffs, Great Oak was home against King. Home Court advantage failed the Wolfpack, as King edged Great Oak 48-46 to advance in the playoffs. The Wolfpack finishes the season 16-12.

Murrieta Mesa also lost their Division 2A game. The team’s slow start in the first period against Beaumont doomed the Rams. The final score was Murrieta Mesa 55, Cougars 65.

Another Southwestern league team bit the dust last night in Division 3AA. Tied 31-31 at the half, Ocean View pulled away from Murrieta Valley in the final period to win 64-53. The Nighthawks came a long way under new head coach Brian Wethers this season. They finished third in the Southwestern league and were 15-11 overall.

In Division 3A, Heritage traveled to Palm Springs to play the Desert Empire Champions. The Indians were too much for the Patriots and defeated Heritage 65-55. The Patriots played in the Sunbelt league and finished the season with a 14-14 record.

Paloma Valley was also eliminated from the Division 3AA playoffs last night. The Hillcrest Trojans, who won the River Valley Championship, edged the Wildcats 59-54. The Wildcats finished 6-6 in the Ivy league and were 16-13 overall.

Perris faced off against Pacifica Christian at home in the Division 4AA game. The Sunbelt league Champions were beaten by the Tritons 88-71. The Panthers were 20-8.

In the Division 5AA openers. Nuview Bridge will lost to University Prep. The Jaguars clawed out a one point victory, winning 56-55.

 

 

 

 

Nuview won the South Valley Championship by going 11-1. They were 22-7 overall. are 9-11.

Temecula Prep also fell in their Division 5AA game. The Patriots ended up taking second place in the South Eastern league behind Rancho Christian and were 8-16 this year. The lost to Loma Linda Academy 79-49.

There were two Wildcard games that were played on Wednesday, February 6th. The first game had Elsinore lose to Jurupa Valley by a basket, 72-70. in the second, Cornerstone Christian put up little resistance to Avalon as they were defeated 66-29. Elsinore ended the season 14-14 and Cornerstone was 10-10.
