HS Basketball: Vista Murrieta Seeks their Sixth Consecutive Southwestern League Championship

The Broncos Goals this Year: A CIF Championship & to Play in the California State Play-offs

Gabby Stoll

Vista Murrieta has dominated Girls Basketball in the Southwestern league since 2012. The Broncos have won the Championship for the past five seasons, and are looking to win it again this year. Coach Kurt Ruth is very excited with the 2017-18 team.

Lexi Mead

We have a lot of really good players on this year’s team, the question for us is if someone will emerge as our “Go To Player” in key moments” said Ruth. “We have graduated significant talent over the last 2 years, with 4 players playing at the D-1 level and several others playing at some level of college basketball, and it is hard to replace that kind of talent”.

The coach remains optimistic. “Nine of the 12 girls on our Varsity team this year are returning Varsity players from last year, including 3 starters. So we do have quite a bit of experience. If we can stay healthy and get quality production across the board, we have a chance to be a pretty good team. Gabby Stoll would be the most obvious choice to emerge as our “stand-out” player.”

Maitland Kingsley

Stoll is a 6 foot senior committed to Westmont College. She is a 4-year Varsity player who averaged 10.2 points & 6.9 rebounds a game last year. She was selected to the 2nd Team All-League last year and is one of the captains this year.

Another big key to the team is going to be the play of our freshman point guard, Lexi Mead said Ruth. If she can adjust to the Varsity level and play to her potential, it will greatly help our chances of reaching our goals. Also, Maitland Kingsley is a “do everything” type of player who lends stability to our team.

Imari Cooley

Kingsley is a 5’11” sophomore who; started last year as a freshman on the Varsity. She averaged 6.1 points and 6.6 rebounds a game and was selected 2nd Team All-League.

Keiara Barton

Imari Cooley, Keiara Barton, and Nakela Smith are three seniors who bring a ton of experience and athleticism to our team” remarked Ruth. Cooley is a 3-year Varsity player but missed all of last season with a torn ACL. She played significant minutes as a sophomore on the team that advanced to the CIF-State Regional Championship Game. She is a captain this year.

Nakela Smith

Barton stands 5’10”and is a 4-year Varsity player. She averaged 5.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.7 steals a game last season. She was on Honorable Mention All-League team last year.

Smith is the short senior on the team. At 5’4” this senior is a 4-year Varsity player. She averaged 4.2 points and 1.9 steals a game last year and was also a Honorable Mention All-League team member. Nakela is a captain this year.

The Broncos Motto this year is “Compete”…Theye want to compete at everything we do on and off the court. Their Goals are sinple, bring home another Southwestern League Title and compete for a CIF Championship…then on to a potential State Play-off berth.

‘Nuff said.
