HS Boy Basketball: Murrieta Mesa Rolls to a 62-53 Victory in the Opening Game of the CIF Southern California State Regional Playoffs

Shamar Wright and Gio Sanders Scored 14 points Each to Lead the Rams

Murrieta Mesa rolled to a 62-53 victory in the opening game of the CIF Southern California State Regional Division 3 Playoffs over Santa Fe Christian Wednesday night. The Rams displayed a lot of fight and heart in last night’s victory, the first ever State Regional game in school history.

“We really did a great job rebounding the ball which I thought was a big difference in the game” said Murrieta Mesa Coach Chris Jones. “Shamar and Anthony each had 9 rebounds and Devin and Gio had 8…….that’s a lot of guys to have that many rebounds and shows how they dominated the interior to lead us to a 11 rebound advantage for the game”.

Seniors Gio Sanders and Shamar Wright led the Rams with 14 points each. Juniors Lamar Wright added 11, Devin Fortune 8, Jonah Zandi 8 and Anthony Salas had 7 points.

“We also did what we had to do from the Free Throw line in a playoff game…..we converted 21 out of 26” said Coach Jones. Gio and Devin were 13/15 combined to lead the way and it certainly makes all the difference in the world when we can convert at the high of a percentage”.

“Balance on the offensive end was also key. Although we did not shoot for a high percentage, our balance in scoring proved difficult for SFC to handle. Shamar and Gio each had 14 points and Lamar had 11. Jonah was also a spark offensively as he hit 2 big 3s in the 2nd quarter and also led a break while feeding a perfect pass to Lamar for a lob dunk that pushed our lead to 14 in the 4th quarter”.

Murrieta Mesa will next face Crean Lutheran in the playoffs. “We are definitely excited to move on to the Quarterfinal Round of the SoCal State Regional Tournament” said Coach Jones. The Saints are 24-9 and were rhe Academy League Champions before winning the CIF Division 3AA Championship.
