The Wolfpack Poised & Ready to Repeat as State & National Champions
The Great Oak Boys Cross Country team won it’s second consecutive CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship Saturday morning on the flat, dusty course at the Riverside City Cross Country Course. The Wolfpack won the Championship despite running the race without one of their key starters, Ryan Shields, who was lost due to a foot injury.
The Wolfpack is known for their depth, their “B” team is capable of beating most of the schools in the Southern Section. Coach Doug Soles called on Gavin Korby to run in place of Shields and the junior rose to the occasion and exceeded all expectations. Korby ended up placing 26th overall with a time of 15:10.4 which made him the fourth of the five Wolfpack runners to score.
Senior Solomon Fountain led the Pack, finishing fifth overall (14:52.5). He was followed by juniors Carlos Carvajal (14:54.4), Jacob Korgan (14:58.2), Korby and senior Justin Eipp (15:13.2) as Great Oak scored 62 points and ran past the competition.
The Southwestern League also had two other teams compete in the CIF Finals Saturday. Chaparral placed 11th with a score of 315 and Vista Murrieta that finished 1th in the Division with 417 points.
The Wolfpack will head to the CIF State Championships next week. The meet will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno.
