HS Cross Country: Great Oak Sweeps the 2015 Mt. SAC Invitational and Runs into the Record Books


The Wolfpack Teams Dominated Both Races this Weekend

Great Oak made history at the 68th annual Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational in Walnut Saturday as the Wolfpack Won the Boys and Girls Sweepstakes races. Great Oak became the first team in ever to accomplish this incredible feat two years in a row.

“The Great Oak Girls added to their record with a seventh consecutive Division 1 girls sweepstakes title Saturday in the Division 1-2 team sweepstakes competition” said Eric Boal, Editor of Dyestatcal.com.  “Only Corona del Mar has more Mt. SAC girls sweepstakes championships with eight overall, but they are spread from 1997-2011 and came in Division 3 and Division 4. The Wolfpack girls ran 88:34 for the eighth best time in course history. All seven Great Oak runners placed in the top 25 of the Division 1-2 team sweepstakesto win its record seventh consecutive Division 1 title at Mt. SAC”. 

The Great Oak Girls team, ranked Number 1 in the Nation was dominant as they beat second place Davis by 89 points. Arcadia was third, Saugus fourth and Phelan Serrano came in fifth. Evelyn Mandell led the Pack as she finished second in the race followed by Destiny Collins in third. Kieba Beatty was sixth, Nicole Rice eleventh and Sandra Pflughoft battling leg cramps was fifteenth.

In the Boys Sweepstakes Great Oak finished first with 40 points, 47 points less than Dana Hills who finished second. Burbank Burroughs was third, West Torrance was fourth and California Whittier fifth.“Great Oak established itself as a legitimate contender for the boys national championship by setting the all-time Mt. SAC course record of 74:47 in the Division 1-2 team sweepstakes race” added Boal.

Spencer Dodds, Cole Spencer and Isaac Cortes led the Pack, all three finishing in the top 10 spots. Solomon Fountain was 13th and Carlos Carvajal was 16th as they broke the previous Mt. SAC record of 75:16 set by the Arcadia.

The Mt. San Antonio Invitational is one of the largest and most prestigious cross country events in the nation. Begun in 1948 by the college to promote the new sport, the course is now legendary with runners around the world.
