The Pumas Explode for 21 Points in the Final Quarter and Shutout Valencia 38-0 in the Opening Round
Chaparral totally dominated their first round game of the 2017 CIF Southern Section Division 5 Championship Playoffs last Friday night. The Pumas won their first playoff game since 2013 as they shutout Valencia 38-0 in the Opening Round.
This week, Chaparral will face Paramount Friday in their Quarterfinal match up against the Pirates. The Pirates 10-1 and are on an ten-game winning streak. They were the San Gabriel Valley League Champions and are ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 5.
Paramount is led by quarterback Cedric Hood. He has thrown for 1134 yards and 15 touchdowns. His favorite receivers are Darius Wallace who has caught 21 passes and twins Ty’Rese and Ty’Rhae Gibson who have combined for 47 catches and over 800 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Demoryea Polidore and Pierre Robinson move the chains on the ground for Paramount. The two have run for over 900 yards and scored 18 touchdowns for the Pirates.
Chaparral jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and that was all for the first half. The Pumas scored 10 in the third quarter and put it away with 21 points in the fourth.
Last week for the Pumas, the defense was rock solid. Seniors Toby Ramirez, Anthony Gutierrez and Jayson Pace anchored the defense for Chaparral. The Pumas caused 3 turnovers as Ramirez made 2 fumbles happen and Jaime Hernandez, Jevon Hill and Joshua Avila recovered one each for Chaparral.
Freshman quarterback Trilian Harris played well Friday night. He completed 12 of 18 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Orlando Ornelas was his favorite receiver with 6 catches for 83 yards and a score.
Ornelas also scored another TD on the ground. Sophomore Justin Manqueros 94yards and led the Pumas in rushing. He also scored twice. Place Kicker Alec Fonseca nailed a 32 yard field goal in the third quarter. He was also a perfect 5 for 5 in PAT attempts.
This Friday night the Pumas will be home to face Paramount. Game time is at 7:30pm.
