HS Football: Heritage Defense Holds as the Patriots Hang on to Beat REV 15-7


The Explosive REV Offense ran into a Rock Solid Patriots Defense Friday night

14359235_668850909929266_1546324897843027780_nFriday night’s game between two of Southern California powerhouse football programs came down to Heritage holding off Redlands East Valley’s final drive in the fourth quarter. With the score 15-7 and the ball on the 4-yard line on fourth down, the Heritage defense rose to the occasion. The Patriots chased REV quarterback Armando Herrera all over the field and brought him down for a 15-yard loss.14358790_668850559929301_325672392042129720_n

Heritage scored first at the end of the second quarter when sophomore Ikaia Tautala ran one in from 10 yards out. The extra point kick failed and the Patriots led 6-0 at the half.

Tautala scored again in the third quarter on a 3-yard run. The Patriots failed to convert their 2-point attempt to make it a 12-0 game.

The Redlands East Valley finally got ignited early in the final quarter. REV drove downfield and finally found the end zone on a 1-yard run by Gabriel Clark. The extra point was successful and the Wildcats trailed 12-7.14344806_668850639929293_3667082553133276127_n

Heritage responded by driving the ball deep into Wildcat territory that ended with a 19-yard field goal by Javier Luna. Luna’s kick padded Heritage’s lead to 15-7.14358804_668849533262737_4809854478143766838_n

Heritage’s Javier Luna gained 69 yards on 15 carries. Sherod White carried the ball 13 times for 56 yards. Tautala scored both Patriots touchdowns and gained 28 yards. quarterback Devan Freedland passed for 134 yards.

Redlands’ senior quarterback Armando Herrera had a big night, completing 24 of 39 passes for 205 yards but could not reach the end zone.

Heritage heads to Corona to take on the Panthers next week. Redlands East Valley will face Yucaipa.
