The Patriots Loss their First Season Opener Since 2009
Heritage as stunned Friday night. The Patriots lost their season opener, 21-18, at Etiwanda. Heritage has not lost an opening game since 2009, when they fell to King 17-14. Some die hard Patriot fans also point out that Heritage has also lost three straight… counting the two losses that ended last season.
The Patriots were ranked ninth in Division 3 this week, lost to a Division 5 “contender”, as Etiwanda is currently ranked 13th. It was a tough contest, with the Eagles Jordan Williams bursting into the end zone on a 15 yard run to win it with under two minutes left in the game.
Etiwanda scored first in the contest. Vicente Garcia nailed a 45 yard field goal to take a 3 point lead in the first period. Heritage came right back in the second period with Kenny Teter breaking into the end zone with a 2 yard run.
Etiwanda tied the score at 6-6 when Garcia kicked his second field goal of the night, this time for 20 yards. The Eagles then took the lead on a Isaiah Vasquez 15 yard touchdown pass to Jordan Williams to make the score 6-13.
In the third Quarter Heritage quarterback Tyler Basham hit Adrian Robles for a 15 yard TD. In the fourth quarter Heritage took an 18-13 lead on a 14-yard TD pass from Basham to AC Rondon with 3:26 left to play when Williams and the Eagles stunned the Patriot faithful.
“Overall, we just didn’t get it done,” said coach Kraig Broach. “It falls on me, and the kids are frustrated. It doesn’t change the quality of kids that we have. They’re an awesome group. They’re frustrated about it, and so am I…we’re going to have to find a way to fix it.
All is not lost Patriot fans. Heritage travels to Hesperia to take on Oak Hills next week. The Bulldogs are 1-0 after beating Antelope Valley 20-0 in their opener. The Eagles will face Murrieta Mesa at home.
