HS Football: Murrieta Valley Clings to a 48-46 Victory over Murrieta Mesa


The Rams Outscored the Nighthawks 46-35 for the Final Three Quarters

It was a classic MV-Mesa slug fest in Murrieta Friday night. The Southwestern league’s two time defending Champion Nighthawks held off a Rams’ furious fourth-quarter rally to hold on to a 48-46 victory. Murrieta Mesa outscored Murrieta Valley 46-35 for the final three quarters of the game.

Murrieta Valley scored twice in the first quarter on Josh Archer’s 3 yard touchdown and a 10 yard scoring pass completed to Jack Yary from quarterback Hank Bachmeier.

Murrieta Mesa got on the board in the second quarter as running back Jose Ayala IV scored on a 6 yard keeper to make it 13-7. The Nighthawks’ Taliq Brown then took the wind out of the Rams sails temporarily when he took the ensuing kick off 96 yards into the end zone for a TD for a 20-7 Murrieta Valley lead.

On the next Ram possession, Murrieta Valley’s Val Montoya recovered a fumble on Murrieta Mesa’s 38-yard line. Bachmeier seized the opportunity and hit Jordan Murry with a 29 yard pass and it was suddenly a 27-7 game.

Murrieta Mesa fought back. Quarterback Austin Cochren drove the Rams downfield and completed a 20 yard pass to Andrew Morris for a touchdown. Mesa place kicker Benjamin Isaksen nailed a 47 yard field goal after a Nighthawk fumble and it was 27-17 at the half.

Murrieta Valley wasted no time as the second half began. Bachmeier found Emilio Valencia open and completed a 20 yard pass for a TD. As the Nighthawks jumped ahead 34-17. The Rams closed the gap as Isaksen kicked his second field goal, this one for 18 yards.

It was 34-20 as the fourth quarter began and things looked bleak for Mesa when Murrieta Valley scored again. Nighthawk running back Corie Johnson made it 41-20 with a 3 yard run.

Quarterback Austin Cochren then threw 3 successive touchdowns in the fourth quarter. First he hooked up on a scoring pass of 30 yards. Cochren then tossed a 31 yard pass to Desmin Jackson for a TD after the Rams recovered a MV fumble.

Chad Ortega then intercepted Murrieta Valley QB Bachmeier’s pass at Murrieta Valley’s 29-yard line. Cochren made it a 2 point game when he hit Damian Thompson with a 29 yard pass for a touchdown and it was 41-39.

Murrieta Valley bounced right back. Bachmeier 12 yard touchdown pass to Jack Yary put the Nighthawks up 48-39. And it’s a good thing too. Murrieta Mesa recovered another fumble by Murrieta Valley at the Murrieta Valley’s 29-yard line. The Rams drove the ball and finally scored on running back Desmin Jackson’s 7 yard run.

Murrieta Valley quarterback Hank Bachmeier threw for four touchdowns, tying the CIF-Southern Section record for most career touchdown passes with 152 with one game left in his High School career. The senior tied J.T. Daniels, who played for of Mater Dei from 2015-2017.

 

 

 

 

Two time Southwestern league Champion Murrieta Valley has won 17 consecutive league games. The Nighthawks will be tested next week against arch rival Vista Murrieta who are looking to recapture the league title this year.

Murrieta Mesa will face Temecula Valley who lost a 35-28 heart breaker to Chaparral last night.
