Irene Jirasevijinda Scores 16 & Jelina Mijares 12 Points in the Eagles Victory
The Rancho Christian Eagles soared to their 12th win of the season Thursday with a solid 48-35 win over Carnegie Schools. The Eagles are off to a 12-2 start and are 3-0 in the South Eastern league. Rancho Christian is ranked ninth in the 5AA Division in the most recent CIF Southern Section polls and are coached by David Hall.
“Rancho Christian has made it a point to be a defensive team this year, and I can see the progress every game” said Coach Hall. “We are hanging our hat on that intensity while trying to be fundamentally sound on the offensive end”.
Rancho Christian jumped out to a 13-10 lead in the first period. The Eagles made it 24-18 at halftime and then extended their lead to 38-30 in the third period. Rancho’s defense kicked in and only allowed 5 points in the final frame to pull out the 48-35 victory.
Irene Jirasevijinda led the Eagles with 16 points. Jelina Mijares added 12 more as Kali Trevithick and Maya Johnson scored 9 points apiece. Marisa Mendoza scored 2 points for Rancho Christian.
“Carnegie is a very well coached team with some great talent along with size and the ability to play on the perimeter and inside was a very tough challenge for us” said Coach Hall. I am proud of the courage and relentless effort that our girls displayed and they did a great job of making halftime adjustments as they’ve shown all season long”.
Coach Hall is excited about Eagles basketball this season. “Irene has a natural ability to score the ball and a great feel of the game, a true competitor. Kali brings an uptempo style along with some extreme athleticism. She is signed to UCLA on a full soccer scholarship. Talahiva Talanoa brings great rim protection and is an exceptional defender, also a fairly decent passer”.
Looks like an exciting season ahead for the Eagles.
