HS Girls Basketball: Vista Murrieta Beats Mission Hills 60-56 in the Opening Game of the Matador Classic Tournament

Freshman Lexi Mead Nails 3 Three-Pointers & Scores 21 points to Lead the Bronco Attack

The Vista Murrieta Girls Basketball team is red hot as they begin the new season. The Broncos improved to 5-0 as they came back from a 30-25 deficit in the first half to beat Mission Hills 60-56.

“This was a really good early season test for us. Mission Hills is always one of the best teams in San Diego Section Girls Basketball and a top team in the state of California as well” said Vista Murrieta Head Coach Kurt Ruth, “ A comeback win like this should only give our team more confidence. It was a hard-fought, down to the wire type of game, and that is exactly what we expected going into it”.

Alexis “Lexi” Mead led the Bronco attack. The 5 foot 4 inch freshman scored 21 points, including 3 three-pointers. She also added 7 rebounds to the mix. Imari Cooley had a “double-double” with 17 points and 12 rebounds. including some big baskets down the stretch.

Keiara Barton scored 9 points fro the Broncos, including a buzzer beating 3-pointer at the end of the 3rd quarter to Vista Murrieta a 41-40 lead going into the 4th quarter. Maitland Kingsley had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

The Broncos achieved this without their star player It was the 4th consecutive game without senior captain Gabby Stoll who isout with an injury. Stoll is expected to be back at some point this week.

We don’t have long to celebrate though because we face a good Cathedral Catholic team in our next game” said Coach Ruth. “It should be another good one as we head out on the road for the first time this season”.

The Broncos head to San Diego tonight to face Cathedral Catholic in the second game of the Matador Classic Tournament. The Dons are 2-1 so far this season and are coming off a 75-53 victory over Olympian.
