HS Girls Basketball: Vista Murrieta Falls To Chaminade 64-52 in the CIF SS Quarterfinals

The Broncos Magical Season Comes to an End

The Vista Murrieta Girl’s Basketball season ended Wednesday night with a heartbreaking 64-52 loss to Chaminade in the quarterfinals of the 2018 CIF Southern Section Championship Playoffs. The Broncos have won the Southwestern league Championship for the past six seasons and were 10-0 in league play.

We ran into an extremely confident and battle-tested top-seeded Chaminade team, and unfortunately we weren’t able to pull off the upset” said Vista Murrieta Coach Kurt Ruth. “Trailing by only 1 at the half, we were right where we wanted to be… however, we had a tough third quarter that ultimately sealed our fate”.

With the score 32-31 at the half, the Broncos stalled in the third period, scoring only 5 points to the Eagles’ 15. The final period was even, but the damage had been done, Vista Murrieta took a 66-52 loss.

Senior Gabby Stoll and freshman Alexis Mead led the Broncos with 12 points apiece. Stoll also grabbed 8 rebounds and Mead had 7 assists.

Senior Imari Cooley and sophomore Maitland Kingsley scored 11 points each for Vista Murrieta. Senior Keiara Barton and junior Natalia Willis each scored 3 points.

Chaminade’s Alexis Whitfield had a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Leslie Hunter scored 18 points and had three steals for the Eagles.

Despite the loss, we had a great season, and we are very proud of what this team accomplished” said Coach Ruth. “An overall record of 25-3 , an undefeated Southwestern League Championship, and a CIF-SS Division 1 Quarterfinal appearance is something special.”

Calvary Murrieta was also eliminated from the Division 5A quarterfinals by Lancaster Baptist 42-39 The Warriors finished fourth in the South Valley league and ended the season with a 14-12 record.
