HS Lacrosse: Great Oak Girls Overwhelm Hemet 13-3 Monday Night


Senior Captain Sydney Simpson Scored 5 goals to lead the Wolfpack Past the Bulldogs

Great Oak faced off against Hemet Monday night in the cold and rain. The Bulldogs lost to Great Oak 18-6 last Wednesday and was looking to upset the Wolfpack. It was not to be…Great Oak overwhelmed Hemet 13-3. The Bulldogs are a new program and are part of the growing sport of lacrosse here in the Valley

Sydni Schickel started off the game with her first varsity goal of the season. She was joined by six other teammates putting points on the board. The high scorer was Sydney Simpson with 5 goals to lead the team to a 14-3 victory over Hemet.

Assists were led by sophomore Sophie Schroll with 2. Senior Sophia Licitra dominated the draw control with 4 possessions while seniors Tatum Fiacco, Kami Scheifer, and Sierra “Diesel” Gaffney executed the transition game which allowed their team to get in position to score.

Great Oak also put up a scrappy defensive effort that was lead by Sydney Hall, a senior and captain of the team. Great Oak’s tough defense did not allow very many shots on goal and created multiple turnovers throughout the game.

Goalie play was solid. Junior Meek Samonte allowed only 2 goals in the first half of play. Then, senior goalie Emma Brennan a.k.a. “Brick Wall Brennan” allowed only 1 goal in the second half. She had a team leading 5 saves against the Bulldogs.

Also for the Wolfpack, junior Skyler Ozbun scored the first varsity goal of her lacrosse career. Great Oak went on to a victory over the Hemet Bulldogs with a final score of 13-3.

The Great Oak Varsity team is in their first season with a new coaching staff. Coach Alicia Brennan and Assistant Coach Nicole “CoCo” Standoff now head the team. They have an outstanding group of varsity players led by a strong senior class and the rising talent of the underclassmen.

Great Oak is now 4-2  and will be away this week to play the Tesoro High School on Thursday evening at 5pm. The Titans have a record of 2-2.

With the loss Hemet falls to 2-7. They play Vista Murrieta tonight.
