Vista Murrieta, Temecula Valley,Heritage, & Santa Rosa Academy Eliminated from the CIF Southern Section Championship Playoffs
The tension was intense at Great Oak. The Wolfpack’s ace pitcher Mata Faapito and San Clemente’s Raeonna Flores were locked in a scoreless duel that lasted for the first five innings of Tuesday’s second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 Championship playoffs.
The Tritons broke up the scoreless drought in the top of the sixth inning. Sydney Kowalski walked with 2 outs and Ehna Cifuentes launched an opposite-field home run off of Faapito to give the Tritons a daunting 2-0 lead.
Great Oak, battled back in their half of the sixth. Faapito crushed a home run to lead off the the inning. The Wolfpack followed with a single by Ramsey Suarez. Candace Yingling struck out, and Abby Trimble flied out. With 2 outs, Sara Kinch walked and setting up Holly Fisher’s single to tie it all up at two runs each.
The Wolfpack mowed down San Clemente in the top of the seventh. Then, the Tritons Flores struck out the first two batters she faced in the inning, bringing up Kayla Edwards. The Great Oak centerfielder ripped a shot over the left wall to win it for the Wolfpack. It was Edwards’ 14th home run of the season.
With the win, Great Oak (24-3-1) advances to the CIF SS Divison 1 quarterfinals on Thursday. The Wolfpack will travel to face Santa Margarita. The Eagles are 25-3 and tied with Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei for the Trinity league Championship.
In Division 2, Temecula Valley fell to El Modena 4-2 and Heritage lost to Godinez 9-4 in Division 4. Rio Hondo Prep slipped past Santa Rosa Academy 2-1 in Division 7.
