HS Softball: Murrieta Mesa Wins the CIF SS Division 3 Championship

Zoey Clark’s Dramatic Walk-off Home Run wins it in the Eighth

Murrieta Mesa defeated Hart 3-1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Championship Game Saturday afternoon. The game went into extra innings and was tied at one with as the Rams came to bat in the eighth, Lauren Randle opened the inning with a single.

Up stepped Zoey Clark and the Rams clean up batter. She hit the first pitch off of Hart reliever Kylie Norwood and crushed it. The ball landed over the center field fence to give Murrieta Mesa the 3-1 victory and the Division Championship.

The game was a classic pitchers duel with Autumn Pease n the circle for Murrieta Mesa and Cassandra Trevizo for Hart. Mesa took the lead in the fifth inning. Karina Romero singled to open the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Camille Rivera. Presleigh Pilon then doubled into left-center field to score Romero. Hart evened things up at one in the top of the sixth inning.

The Indians struck right back. Aly Kaneshiro singled home Norwood on a 1-2 count to score the tying run. The Indians would take the Rams into extra innings.

Trevizo was replaced by Norwood in the sixth. She had pitched five innings, giving up one run on eight hits. Norwood was cruising along until she ran into Clark in the eighth.

Pease turned in another great effort for Murrieta Mesa. She earned the win for for the Rams as she tossed all eight innings. The Rams Ace gave up just one run on six hits. She struck out eight and earned her 22nd victory of the year. She was one of the pivotal keys to the Rams success this season.

I know this is a surprise for many people, but not to me,” said Rams coach Antonio Romero. “We expected this from this group. I see these girls everyday and how hard they work. We’ve played against some of the best teams around this season and hung tough. These girls earned this one.”

Murrieta Mesa are the new Champions of the CIF Southern Section Division 3 Softball. They ended the year 24-10. Good job Rams!
