HS Softball: Murrieta Valley Shuts Out Chaparral 12-0

Jennelle Muñoz Throws a Shut Out while Makena Smith Hits 2 Home Runs and McKenna Tjaden Another

Murrieta Valley got revenge for Wednesday’s 17-2 loss to Chaparral yesterday when the Nighthawks shut out the Pumas 12-0. Murrieta Valley sophomore Jennelle Muñoz didn’t allow a single run against Chaparral, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Nighthawks to victory Thursday. She also struck out 3 Pumas.

The Nighthawks scored twice in the first inning as senior Makena Smith homered on the first pitch of her at bat. Smith, who went 4-for-4 at the plate also homered in the third inning when Murrieta scored 6 more. She knocked in 5 runs.

Senior McKenna Tjaden also hit a home run in the fourth inning as the Nighthawks scored their final four runs. Senior Alexis Buchanan, junior Megan Skousen and freshman Alexa Yarbro also drove in runs for Murrieta.

Nighthawk senior Kaley Robinson, sophomore Bailey Williams and Skousen each stole a base.

Senior Alyn Navarjo took the loss for Chaparral. She allowed eight hits and eight runs over two and two-thirds innings. Junior Julia Leslie came in to pitch and gave up 4 runs against the Nighthawks. Seniors Jordan DiGacinto and Mahia Meoina each racked up two hits for Chaparral

In other Southwestern league action, Murrieta Mesa shut out Vista Murrieta 3-0 and Great Oak cruised past Temecula Valley 6-1.

Murrieta Valley will play the Golden Bears at Temecula Valley on Tuesday. Chaparral is home against Vista Murrieta.
