Kate Farren Homers and Drives in 3 Runs as Jennelle Muñoz Pitches the Nighthawks Past the Wolfpack
Murrieta Valley stunned Great Oak and knocked the Wolfpack out first place in the Southwestern league Tuesday afternoon. The Nighthawks improved to 4-3 and moved into third place. The Wolfpack is now 5-2 and trail Murrieta Mesa by a game.
MV and Great Oak traded runs in the first inning. The Nighthawks scored 3 in the second to make it 5-2 and added another in the fourth to go ahead 6-2. The Wolfpack scored their final run in the fifth as Murrieta packed on 3 more in the final 2 innings.
Junior Kate Farren hit a home run and drove in 3 runs for the Nighthawks. Senior Kaley Robinson knocked in 2 runs and junior Ryann Steiner and senior Makena Smith had one RBI each.. Sophomore Bailey Williams scored twice for Murrieta.
Pitcher Jennelle Muñoz was credited with the victory for Murrieta Valley. The sophomore allowed seven hits and three runs over seven innings. Muñoz ended up with 3 strikeouts.
Mata Faapito took the loss for Great Oak. She went one and one-third innings, allowing three runs on three hits and walking one. Sydney Preston and Paulina Johnson both gave up 3 runs in relief.
“Jenelle pitched an awesome game and the team supported her with quality at bats. Great Oak is always a great competitor and we are happy to pick up this win. We are looking for a CIF berth and we need just one more win to do it… this team is putting in the hard work, and should be rewarded for that on May 15 when playoff games start”.
In other Southwestern league action, Murrieta Mesa held off Chaparral 11-9 to move into first place. Vista Murrieta beat Chaparral.
The two teams lock horns again Thursday.
