HS Track & Field: Murrieta Mesa Boys Team Wins the CIF State Championship, Great Oak Places Second


The Rams Won the School’s First State Title with a 35-30Victory over Great Oak

The Murrieta Mesa Boys Track and Field team won the first state title in the School’s history Saturday. The Rams pulled off a 35-30 victory over Southwestern League Rival Great Oak at Buchanan High’s Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.

Great Oak took second place in the the 100th Anniversary of CIF State Track & Field Championships with 30 points. Clayton Valley placed third with 28 points, Davis was fourth and Clovis North was fifth.

The Rams won the 1600 relay with a state-leading time of 3:10.86 to clinch the title. Matthew Okonkwo,Jermarcus Tate, Christian Shakir-Ricks and Davonte Williams make up the team.

Shakir-Ricks won the 200 meters with the best time in the state (20.98). He also placed third in the 100 (10.54) and ran anchor in the relay which Murrieta Mesa also won.

I have never seen a kid more competitive than him,” said Murrieta Mesa Coach Aaron Ballou. “If we had a snowstorm, it would be the best conditions for him because everyone would be worrying except for him. All he is worried about is going out and competing.”

Mathew Okonkwo finished fourth in the 400 (47.52) and the Rams finished fifth in the 4×100 relay (41.51).

Great Oak’s won the 400 meter relay as Joel Collins, Mikel Barkley, C.J. Stevenson and Grant Gaskins won the opening relay in a time of 40.96.

Stevenson won the State Title in the triple jump (49-11.75) and was fifth in the long jump.The Wolfpack’s Harrison Gould took third in the shot put.

Heritage’s Jett Charvet, the State’s defending Champion, took third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:50.79.

The Serra Girls won their Second team title since 2012.
