Great Oak & Vista Murrieta Finish First and Third in Division 1
The Murrieta Mesa Boys Track and field team made school history on Saturday. They won the first Division 2 CIF Championship title for the school. Southwestern league teams dominated as Great Oak placed first and Vista Murrieta third in Division 1.
The Rams scored 73 points to dominate the Division. Second place Mission Viejo scored 52 points and Mater Dei was third with 49 points. Elsinore tied for seventh place with 24 points.
Murrieta Mesa took total control the Division 2 sprinting titles. Christian Shakir-Rick, Matthew Okonkwo and Devonte Williams took first, second,and third in the 200 meters. Shakir-Rick also won the 100. Kenneth Williams took 4th in triple jump with a leap of 44’4.
“We have been blessed with great kids and coaches who just want to get better,” Rams coach Aaron Ballou said. “To come this far in one year’s time is amazing. It’s a real testament to these kids work ethic that they’ve reach this point.”
Murrieta Mesa won with only 6 boys competing in the CIF Southern Section Finals. The team consisted of seniors Davonte Williams, Christian Shakir-Ricks, Jeremiah Queen and juniors Jermarcus Tat, Kenneth Williams and Matthew Okonkwo.
The victory was sweet for Murrieta Mesa Last year the Rams failed to score a point in the finals. This year, they are Division 2 Champions.Great Oak swept the Division 1 Team Championships for both Boys and Girls on Saturday. It was the second time in the past three seasons that the Wolfpack has swept the event. Great Oak was third in Division 1 and Elsinore finished seventh in Division 2.
Next week features the Masters Tournament highlighting Individual winners from all schools. The CIF State Championships will be in two weeks.
